Essential Functions

Provide and/or produce texts in alternative formats. Oversee and participate in the conversion of all documents (maintaining adherence to Federal copyright laws), correspondence, course materials, and texts in print or electronic formats into accessible formats for students with disabilities. Create and maintain records, spreadsheets and databases, recording student requests, actions taken to obtain documents and actions taken in detailed case notes.

Provide assessments for individual students regarding their need for assistive technology and make recommendations to students about technology that might be most effective for them. Develop training materials for students using assistive technology. Supervise and provide training sessions for new users of technology.

Assist in program development and training activities, including but not limited to, assistive technology, universal design, working with students with disabilities, and efficiencies using technology aimed at strengthening student learning. Engage in professional development activities with the purpose of keeping current on best practices and law applications impacting access and accessibility. Serve as a liaison to the university community regarding website and electronic format accessibility.

Maintain inventory of department assistive equipment and technology, including software. Ensure all equipment and technology is current and updates are in a timely fashion. Conduct on-going needs assessments and evaluations to determine the effectiveness of technology and make recommendations for future technology needs that will enhance student access. Ensure all student computers in ASC and impacted areas to provide access to accommodations are kept in good working order: maintaining updates, software, licenses, etc. Develop and maintain the department website and shared databases, including all current information on assistive technology.

Plan and facilitate implementation of accommodations, auxiliary aids, and support services for students who experience disabilities. Conduct intakes through an interactive process and analyze supporting documentation to determine eligibility for appropriate accommodations.

Support students in resolving disability related issues that may be a barrier and refer student to appropriate campus and community support services if outside the scope of the department.

Consult with students, administration, faculty, and staff as needed in regards to the implementation of disability related accommodations.

Additional Duties

Supervise part time student staff assisting with alternative formatting and assistive technology implementation. This position assumes primary responsibility during the summer terms, June and July, for management of requests for interpreting and/or transcription services and captioning services.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Special Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Services, Information Services or closely related field.

Experience: Two-years experience working with different types of disabilities and operationalizing into reasonable accommodations, experience with alternative formatting and/or accessible technology.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education: Master’s Degree in Education, Special Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, or closely related field.

Preferred Experience: Experience working with students with disabilities, specifically with visual impairment, previous experience with text conversion in an academic setting, ability to manage multiple projects at the same time, knowledge current trends of assistive technology, supervision of student employees, knowledge of ADA/ADAA and Section 504 & Section 508.

Salary $38,500-40,000
